Specialist Timber Construction Services
Construction
Timbermann uses only the best materials and employs the most comprehensive practices when it comes to materials, construction, and preparation for your installation.
STRUCTURAL MATERIALS:
Timbermann uses SABS (Grade5) certified CCA (H4) grade pressure treated structural timber & CCA (H4) grade pressure treated gum poles for your structure.
Paint-on (or brush-on) treatments, no matter how good the product, are surface treatments, and rely completely on the ongoing maintenance/application of the product to ensure effective protection from rot and/or insect attack. Once a deck is built, in most cases, you can imagine that properly treating the structural components on a yearly basis would usually be all but impossible!
Timbermann purchases structural timbers directly from timber mills in the sub-continent.
We then have our stock specifically pressure treated to H4 Grade CCA Specifications.
This important because the H4 Grade treated timbers have a 25-year SABS Certified 'in-ground' life expectancy and require no further treatment or maintenance.
The same cannot be said for many installers in Gauteng, most of whom will use only CCA H3 spec timbers, and some using raw timbers painted with Creosote or the like. We regularly replace such installations, where the structure has crumbled within 2 years!

CONSTRUCTION PROTOCOLS:
With our background in timber frame construction (schools, houses, bank-bonded buildings and the like), we understand and subscribe to the SABS Code for Timber Frame Construction. SANS10082 forms the basis for our structural design and gives you peace of mind knowing that you can confidently "Walk our Talk"
TIMBER VARIETIES:
Timbermann will build a deck for you from whatever timber takes your fancy or suits your needs.
Here is a file which contains information specifications for a number of timber varieties: TIMBER SPECS
The information describes the timbers in terms of hardness, durability, resistance to insect attack, density and expected life spans, among others... very interesting!
We promote the use of a couple of the best timbers we have come across - in particular, the exceptional Eucalyptus Sideroxylon, commonly the Red Ironbark
This exceptionally hard timber with its stunning grain patterning and deep red/brown is known for its natural resistance to rot and insect attack - making them ideal candidates for construction of items exposed to the elements. Typically, Ironbark is used in the construction of road and railway bridges, wharfs, mining applications and for railways sleepers due to its proven record for long-term performance in weather-exposed structural applications.
Furthermore, we source this timber locally. This means that supply is more readily available than most of the imported timbers. It also means that we get this spectacular timber at a reasonable price and that the cost is not affected by fluctuating rand/dollar exchange rates.
The Ironbark, in South Africa, has been declared an alien invader. This means that you will not only be purchasing some of the hardiest and most beautiful timbers available, but you will be contributing to conservation in Southern Africa by consuming timber from trees which pose risk due to the environment.
PRESERVATIVE TREATMENTS:
There are more products on the market than one could list. Our search for the best timber preservative treatments led us to products provided by SILKWOOD and TIMBERLIFE, South Africa's most trusted names in industrial & factory level timber treatments.
Timbermann pre-treats your timber decking by dip-treatment. The preservative oils used for timber deck treatment contains insecticide, fungicide and rot inhibitors.
We do not simply brush on these treatments; we soak your precious timber decking by submersion, and this happens twice, ensuring all surfaces are saturated!
Products we typically employ include:
Silkwood M7 Deck Oil - M7 is a solvent-borne water repelling penetrating wood oil sealer, with UV blocking agents to give it that touch in the hot rays of the sun. The product has been formulated specifically for application to medium to high density hardwoods, although the product can also be applied to low-density wooden surfaces.
Silkwood only uses the finest raw materials to ensure your finished application enjoys the ultimate and superior wood protection it deserves
SatinDip - a high quality, solvent-based penetrating sealer that protects raw (uncoated) wood against water ingress, surface degradation and contamination. The special blend of drying oils and water repellent wax components deeply penetrates, stabilizes and nourishes the wood. It therefore acts as a transit stabilizer and protective sealer that prevents excessive checking and splitting of pre-manufactured timber products during transport and storage and also repels waste splashes during building construction. SatinDip dries to a satin-like, translucent finish that does not flake or peel.
Satinwood28Base - a solvent-based finish that contains penetrating water repellent oil and wax components to nourish and protect wood against the elements when exposed to exterior conditions. Satinwood28Base contains a fungicidal additive that provides added surface protection to wood against mold growth and fungal discolouration. It also contains an additional insecticide to provide surface protection against wood borer and termite attack.
Make no mistake - the products we employ and the dipping processes Timbermann subscribes to are the best possible protection for your decking. They may cost more upfront, but the value of preparing your timber properly cannot be emphasized enough.
These preservative treatment products and in particular, the dip-treatment process, sets Timbermann apart from its competitors.
